Principal Investigators
Dr. Miranda Fidler-Benaoudia
Dr. Fidler-Benaoudia is a Research Scientist in the Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research at Alberta Health Services, and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.
She received her BS in Health Sciences at Boston University (2011), MSc in Social Epidemiology at the University College London (2012), and PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Birmingham (2015). She subsequently completed postdoctoral training at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (2015-2018) before moving to Calgary to establish her research program (2018). Her research focuses primarily on describing the burden of childhood, adolescent and young adult cancers and evaluating late-effects in these young cancer survivor populations in order to inform clinical care and prevention strategies. She is additionally interested in evaluating cancer in indigenous peoples and continues to undertake research comprehensively describing cancer indicators nationally, regionally, and at global levels. Dr. Fidler-Benaoudia’s research program has been funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Alberta Cancer Foundation, and Kids Cancer Care Foundation. Dr. Christine Friedenreich
Dr. Friedenreich is the Scientific Director of the Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research at Alberta Health Services and is an Adjunct Professor and Division Head, Preventive Oncology, Department of Oncology at the University of Calgary. She received her PhD (1990) in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto and did post-doctoral training at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the University of Calgary. Dr. Friedenreich has been at the Alberta Cancer Board (now AHS) since 1995 and was the Visiting Scientist at IARC in 2004-2005.
Dr. Friedenreich's research program focuses on the role of physical activity in cancer prevention, rehabilitation, and survival. Her research also examines the biologic mechanisms that mediate the association between physical activity and cancer. She has conducted case-control and cohort studies of physical activity in breast, prostate, and endometrial cancer risk and survival. She was also the Principal Investigator of the ALPHA Trial (Alberta Physical Activity and Breast Cancer Prevention Trial) that examined the effects of aerobic exercise on intermediate biologic end points for breast cancer and the BETA (Breast Cancer and Exercise Trial in Alberta) study, the sequel to the ALPHA Trial, which examined how dose of aerobic exercise influences biomarkers associated with breast cancer risk. She is currently the co-Principal Investigator of the Alberta Moving Beyond Breast Cancer (AMBER) cohort study that is examining how physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health-related fitness are related to survival after breast cancer in a cohort of newly diagnosed breast cancer cases in Alberta.
